One dead, two injured and vehicles torched in Maponya Mall

SOWETO - One person, believed to be an e-hailing driver was shot dead after an attack at Maponya Mall on Wednesday night. The driver was then torched inside his vehicle by his attackers.

Police also confirmed that two other people, one a driver and a passerby were rushed to hospital after they sustained gun wounds following this attack. The wounded driver's car was also set alight in the same mall.

The attack is suspected to be related to the ongoing violence and confrontation between e-hailing drivers and taxi drivers.

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says they are investigating a murder case and two counts of attempted murder following the incident.

Nevhuhulwi admitted that the area has had history of violence between e-hailing drivers and taxi drivers before, but these were addressed by relevant departments.

The SAPS taxi violence detectives and other relevant law enforcement agencies have been depolyed to investigate and monitor the situation.
